What happens when you mix Kids and Fairy Doors

Yo yo yo (or is that ho, ho, ho?) my fellow crafters!! Fairy Merry Christmas!!

Fairy Merry Christmas 2crochethooks

We got together with a few other crafters and bloggers to share our take on a Fairy Merry Christmas! Check out (here) for more info in case you missed it. This is the first post in the series and I hope you will visit Maria @ SewTraveledInspired tomorrow to see her post. Check the bottom of this post for a full list!!

A while back I had the idea of making a TON of fairy doors and then scattering them around the local parks and other places just for fun. Well one thing led to another and I didn’t get the craft done. I still had the wood doors that hubby was kind enough to cut out for me so decided to see what the grandkids would do.

Fairy Door Supplies 2crochethooksI set out some paint, ribbons, lace, sticks, flowers & leaves, beads, left over bugs from the night lights, puzzle pieces, and misc. other things I thought they might want to use. I mean they were things I might use so maybe they would? I did tell them if they wanted something in particular to let me know and I would find it.

Then I asked if they knew what fairies were – of course they did and gave various answers. Hailey, my niece, said they are evil – I am guessing a story there but she didn’t share; Bob mentioned flying and tooth fairies; Rami gushed about magic (she is at that stage you know).

Then I asked if they knew about Fairy doors? Bob, already bored with the yacking, was exploring the table. Hailey said they were to keep the fairies OUT of our world while Rami argued they were to allow us into the fairy world. Kids are so cute!

Then I let them have at it.

We ended up with some interesting creations.

Rami wants the fairies to come or to go to them, unsure:

Hailey emphasized that she thought the fairies were evil. She actually cut ribbon into tiny pieces to spell the word evil….:

Bob copied Rami (his is the black/blue w/yellow flower) and then looking at his other two doors thought they looked like a lower case ‘i’ so glued them together with a flower. Rami also did the key under mat door – on the other side she drew a key – she has a wicked sense of humor.

After they were finished I mentioned that I had meant for these to be Christmas Tree ornaments. So Rami made one into a present (to the left). They had such fun I thought I would make one – it’s the one with the sticks, puzzle pieces and button bee and flower. And if you are curious, I did burn myself TWICE with the hot glue. Thanks for your concern and I have recovered. Mostly.

All in all the three crafting experiments with the grands really gave me a new appreciation for unlimited creativity. These guys had no prior expectation of what to create, weren’t hampered by 1000 images of previously crafted items to wrestle into submission and felt free to explore and create without fear of matching some arbitrary standard of beauty  – they had no fear and just used their own imagination! Totally awesome and freeing experiment in crafting!!

Craft freely people!
