How to make a shawl from pajamas

A while back we made a scarf from a pair of flannel pajama pants (here). I had more than one pair to upcycle so thought what can I do with the other one?

Then it came to me – what about a shawl?

How it’s done:

Cutting pj pants

Cut the pj pants at the crotch, save the top for something else. Also remove the hem.

You end up with two legs, wider at one end then the other. Sew the two wide ends together, making one long ‘scarf’ that’s wider in the middle. I left the legs together, making this shawl three layers thick. For a wider shawl cut the legs open along the inside seam, then sew the wider ends together. Does that make sense?

For the lining I used this 3xl tall red t-shirt l I had, matched great! Because I knew I had to cut the shirt in two pieces, I cut it before sewing the legs together. Wanting fringe, I cut the jersey a half inch bigger on the top and what would be the middle, leaving approx. 3-4 inches on the bottom side and what would be the ends of the scarf. I have a feeling I am not explaining this well!

Next I sewed the t-shirt and pj scarves together ‘wrong sides together, leaving a space for turning. Once turned I went back and added a decorative stitch all around the outside edges.

To start the fringing, I straightened out the edges a bit and removed a square at the corners.

Then I cut 1/2 in strips across the bottom and ends of the shawl.

Done! and pretty awesome if I say so myself! (ignore all the mess in the background lol)

Have you created anything from pj pants? They are so versatile! and you know sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a finished item at the thrift store or yard sales then to buy the equivalent amount of cloth at the store!
Happy crafting to you!
