Cheesy Baked Penne or not

I was looking for a recipe that would use up some of our leftover ham and liked the sound/look of this recipe on Recipegirl.com titled “Cheesy Baked Penne

Cheesy Mac & Ham

Yes, it’s not really penne – I had to use elbow noodles, sorry it was all I had. The recipe ended up just as delicious!! Really, grandkid approved!

I almost followed the instructions, had a few hiccups with the pantry –  no penne pasta, no frozen peas (not sure why these would be in there anyway). Otherwise exactly right…..well close to exactly….

I put my 4 cups of milk on and the water for the noodles, added butter to a pan and chopped up my left over ham (I really needed more).

I added the flour to the butter and then added the milk slowly per the instructions. Kristina taking a turn whisking. After several minutes I felt the sauce was too thin so I added a bit more flour.

Rami wanted to help so she took a turn whisking while I added the cheese. She likes cooking.

I did add the ham to the sauce and let the ham heat up before I added the noodles. I then poured it into an oven pan and baked it about 20 mins. Without the frozen peas and by adding the ham to the sauce to heat up, I didn’t think it needed more time to be done.  However, I like my cheeze crunchy so it could have used more time to get that way or it could have been hit with the broiler…the grandkids did not want cruchy cheese…..sometimes I wonder where they get it from…..

Overall I give this recipe 4 stars. Next time I will add more seasonings – more pepper and some garlic. Not sure the nutmeg was really needed and the amount was so small, not sure I tasted it over the cinnamon and nutmeg on the ham (left over sweet ham). Pretty tasty!

    Mmmmm…. crunchy cheese! Yes, I too would have put it under the broiler to get that golden brown deliciousness of crunchy cheese! 🙂 Your grands are cute!

    • Thanks 🙂 they take after grammy! lol 🙂 I so love crunchy cheese – how can kids not? My son doesn’t either. Totally ruins having pizza or lasagna – I have to make his own separately so I can have TON and TONS of cheese!!
