Hi everyone, Kristina here. You may have noticed our pretty new picture ^ you like it? Its for our new series, all year gift guide. If you are anything like me as soon as Christmas was done you were thinking about what you were going to get next year, if you’re not like me and dreading it then this series will still be good for you. We plan on sharing some great gift ideas with you through out the year so you are prepared by the time Christmas gets around. You may see some good house warming, birthday, anniversary, maybe even Valentines day gifts too. Our goal is to only provide reviews on items we have personally used and think would make a great gift. That being said lets introduce our first gift of the new year,
I picked this item for several reasons, 1) I love it, its gorgeous, 2) Christmas is a time to remember Christ so why not a cross, 3) jewelry pretty much always makes a good gift and last but most important 4) you are supporting a starving artist and being a starving artist myself I sympathize.
NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, works together with talented artisan designers around the world to produce stunning, keepsake treasures. Their mantra is to spread global happiness and I am SO down with that! The artist for this cross is Mahavir and a little about him:
” I was born and brought up in the beautiful and historical city of Jaipur. The scenery is beautiful, and the historical monuments and warm people are what make this city so special. I studied commerce, but ever since I was a child, I have always been interested in creating new things. This creative instinct is what has helped me come this far. Designing jewelry and learning about gemstones has been my passion from a young age. What began as a hobby eventually became my vocation. Feeling confident enough to venture out on my own, I started my own workshop, specializing in gemstones. It was a tough job initially, but after soon receiving accolades for my work, it became smooth sailing. Later, I launched my own jewelry collections, and I have been doing so ever since. I design all my jewelry, and I thoroughly enjoy my work. My workshop is set up in such a way that I can work on handcrafted designs and do casting as well. My designs are traditional and contemporary. I am especially proud of my Jaipur line, which features gemstones inlaid upon unique designs that stylistically represent my beloved hometown. In addition, I’ve continued my work with semi-precious stones, which I cut and facet at the workshop. At this point in my career, I spend most of my time designing, and several artisans here help me transform my ideas into reality.”
This beautiful piece of jewelry is sterling silver, my preferred metal choice, and garnets. Funny story about garnets, my mother bought me a set of garnets one year (necklace and earrings) now any time she sees garnets she thinks of me. I loved this necklace for its choice of gemstone. Also my first cross necklace was when I left Basic Training (I was in the Air Force) and it was a Celtic cross, it was a flat piece of metal with a stamp on it but I loved that cross (I still have it actually) so I was very excited that this one too was a Celtic cross.
All in all this necklace is perfect for me but what makes it perfect for you to give as a gift you wonder? Its lovely, its sturdy, it comes with a little card talking about the artist, and you are helping to support an artist. Its like 2 gifts in one, a gift for your loved one and a gift for the artist supporting his amazing work. Your satisfaction is guaranteed so you have nothing to lose.
